Opal mines at the Three Mile was worked extensively from the earliest days, the Three Mile is recorded in annual technical and geological survey reports of the NSW Department of Mines as the field with the highest production rates well into t he 1960s, yielding more opal than all other fields combined. It is impossible to estimate total production. Comparisons with other areas such as the new fields at the Coocoran are problematic, but it is likely that Lunatic Hill was the richest black opal field of all time.
